I gave this presentation as part of the GEM Capstone Seminar. It was interesting to look back at my experiences attending a Spanish immersion school as a child and moving through the United States education system with an eye to cultural biases in the ways in which we are taught to articulate our family histories and personal identities through the lens of the American Dream. This process of reflection was particularly illuminating when I looked back at a family tree assignment that I completed in middle school, which is set as the featured image for this post. I integrated the ideology of the American dream by portraying the Statue of Liberty surrounded by light and rainbows, whereas I depicted the “Old World” as barren with withered crops.
